Spain as the new Greece?

Have a look at this article as it brings to our class some interesting discussions and contemporary concerns about Spain. Also look at the two graphs and statistical information presented on the left column. Post your thoughts and comments below.

  1. Spain’s economically trying times are not being aided by the government’s search for a scapegoat. According to the article, the government in Madrid has chosen to blame “Anglo-Saxon media allied with nefarious speculators looking to undermine the euro.” At first glance this argument seems like the plot of a conspiracy movie; outsiders trying to undermine and tear apart a country. Infrastructure Prime Minister, Jose Blanco even states his belief that Spain is under attack of a conspiracy. The basis of the argument comes from nervous investors who worry over the idea of the euro itself. Many countries using the euro have recently come into hard times, thus outsiders (investors) believe the currency itself at fault. This seems like an irrational conclusion because of the state of the entire economic world. Nearly all countries have had some economic problems, and most still have them to this day.

  2. It seems that Spain is using the Anglo-Saxons media as someone to blame. Also like Ben said Jose Blanco thinks Spain is under attack of conspiracy. But what was interesting was that all the countries who were not recovering or slowly recovering from the economic drop were noticed as the PIIGS of the EU. This term has been used a lot before because they are keeping the Euro down, and even though the the article blames the Euro you cannot blame currency. All countries have economic problems you just have to hope that eventually they will come out of it, because like the rest of the world no one is not suffering from economic problems.
